WTXL is reporting that Greg Cohen, who you know from YoYoGuy.com, Lofty Pursuits, Infinite Illusions, and the World Yo-Yo contest was arrested today on alleged tax fraud. The full article is here
On a personal note, I know Greg and really hope this is a mistake.
Update: Greg is out on bail. Those close to Greg are saying that it’s not as big of a deal as the charges says it is (as we here at YoYoSkills are also hoping). Greg, at the advice of his lawyer, has given no comment.
The actual charges pulled from the latest news reports seem to be:
– Failure to pay back taxes
– Holding collected sales tax
More as this story continues to unfold.
It does not look like the World Yo-Yo Contest will be affected. The IYYF is preparing a statement, which is expected to be inline with the current WYYC timeline but it is unknown if the contest will be run with, or without participation from Greg.
Editorial: I can’t really express how much I want this to not be true. While I know that there are plenty of people who know Greg better than I do, I have met the man and talked with him many times and can’t believe that he would do something like this on purpose. I was hesitant to even post it up but Facebook had already exploded with the news and I was seeing a lot of guesses as to what happened without references to the story. I ask the readers remember that the DOR (Department of Revenue) has made mistakes like this in the past, and while it takes a lot to get an arrest warrant, that doesn’t mean that this couldn’t be a mistake. Greg, if you see this, I am rooting for you. I hope this can be overcome and I consider this kind of news that I occasionally have to report on in my volunteer news blog, along with reporting deaths, suicides, and money laundering to be especially stomach churning.
