Interview – Pat Cuartero: YoYoNation's Online Yo-Yo Store King

Name: Pat Cuartero
Experience: 10 Years
Specialty: Organizing Events, 2a Magic, and Online Yo-Yo Store King

I was lucky enough to get Founder and Owner of YoYoNation.com, Pat Cuatero, to sit down with me and give me the skinny on his yoyo life.

DrYoYo: Pat, YoYoNation is a Huge success, and leads the US market in yoyo sales. What do you owe your success to?
Pat: Man – tough question.  Honestly – the support of the yoyo community, of which I am proud to be a part as a player and collector, not as a store owner. I always put the first two first…my passion first and then business and I think that’s what helped.
Of course there’s hard work, no sleep, and certain other things, but I think that’s what it’s all about for the most part I LOVE this stuff.  There is no doubt about it.  From being on stage performing,  to hanging out with friends I know (and don’t know), to staring and drooling over the newest yo-yo’s released, I am 100% yoyo!

DrYoYo: How do you feel when online competition folds up shop? (i.e. Extreme Spin and Dave’s Skill Toys)
Pat: Wow, provocative… Wait, Dave’s is done?  Honestly when I first started YoYoNation I was almost disheartened at the petty quarreling amongst the stores, so I changed direction and literally did NOT care about anything those people were doing and followed my own path and vision.  I still do that to this day.
DrYoYo: What got you started in yo-yoing in the first place?
Pat: I had extra change in my pocket back when I was in high school.  Like most teenagers during that time, I used to play Street Fighter, but I was pretty hardcore (and used to win at the arcade, if I may add) and had lots of quarters left over.  Now, I don’t like carrying change in my pocket (only yoyos!), so I purchased a red Duncan Butterfly from a comic book store that had it on the counter for display.  I threw it down once…and the rest was history.
DrYoYo: I am going to have to add Street Fighter Aficionado to your profile now
Pat: Ha ha, nah – not so much anymore but it is still fun and I enjoy beating our interns at Tekken
DrYoYo: I understand Yuuki Spencer is into Street Fighter.  We should get you two in a Head On Head competition.
Pat: Ha, ha.
DrYoYo: Who would you say is your biggest inspiration, both in business and in yo-yoing?
Pat: Yo-yoing first, any 2a player.  Every time I go to a contest I am inspired by everyone.  The greats and standards are all awesome.  You know – Ando, Yuuki, Mark Montgomery, Shinji, and to many more to list.  A lot of people are just amazing, and I learn something from all of them
DrYoYo: How did you feel seeing the 2a Great John Ando storm all over 1a at worlds this year?
Pat : Oh man! That was just awesome. That guy is so talented and so chill it was just amazing.  He has his own completely different styles for his 1A and 2A, and they’re just awesome.

DrYoYo: Care to share your favorite yo-yoing experience with our readers?
Pat: My favorite yo-yoing experience…Man I owe yo-yoing a lot of things. Many of my life’s experiences are just amazing because of yo-yoing, but it would probably be the day I got my THP shirts.  If I can name one specific time of my yo-yoing life it would be that day. To work so hard for something and actually attaining it.  After that I was able to meet the rest of the original Hawaii crew and just led to so many things.
DrYoYo: What do you feel you have sacrificed for YoYoNation to succeed?
Pat: Ha ha. Everything.  I left a six figure salary job on Wall St. Many hours of sleep and lots of nights at home and not out with friends.  I could go on and on, but I can tell you, that the rewards are enormous and I have absolutely ZERO regrets.  I’ve never been so happy in my life and it just goes to show I don’t need money, just give me yoyos and food.
DrYoYo: Between running the yo-yo store, family, organizing IYYO, Friends, how do you possibly have time to throw anymore?
Pat: Well one of my favorite philosophies is that with a yoyo in your hand
you are never “waiting”, you’re simply playing with a yoyo. So here in NYC, while others are “waiting” for the train to come in the subway, I am throwing.

DrYoYo: Tell us about YoYoNation 2.0.
Pat: Well I can’t tell you much right now, but I can tell you it is a better experience. We are doing it because of growth and to serve our customers and friends better.  We expect it to launch after this year’s holiday season
DrYoYo: What do you see when you look into the crystal ball regarding the Future of Yo-Yoing?
Pat: My crystal ball is biased, I’m a hopeless romantic.  Ha, ha.  I would love to be going on tours like the good old THP days again.
DrYoYo: “So…. Your First name is Francis huh?
Pat: Ha ha, “You sir, have crossed the line. This interview is over.” Ha ha ha.

You can see Pat’s hard work at his online store,YoYoNation
